earth day

You might have forgotten about me. But we go way back.
Back to the days of lightning and hunger. When you and I were not so different.
I did my best to control you. I tempered your spirit with a landslide, a flood, a rush of fire through the forest. It worked for a while.
But you were never sated with being part of me. You realized you could change me, mold me, harness my energy against me.
In the blink of cosmic time, you removed me.
So on this day, I want you to remember me.
Remember our walks, naked, unashamed, in the light. Remember the tiger stalking you. The eagle above you. The sparrow with the bleeding worm. The fish reflecting light on the autumnal equinox. The desert rose, rising.
Soon you’ll be left with just these words — things that stand for things but are not real. You will puzzle at this. You will wonder what this is.
It is a reminder. I am here. Always will be. But everything on me will not.
We go way back. Remember that.
