Springtime

Sunshine and teeth. So many teeth barred to the world. Wind moves through the sugar leaf maples with young, pliant leaves. A frisbee sails soundlessly through the air. On a grassy lawn two women in bathing suits eat blood-red ahi and smile back and forth to each other. The rhododendrons bloom and drop their flowers and bloom again endlessly for the season. A bee settles on a rusty apricot blossom.

A siren switches on. Nobody ceases their jollies. On it goes. It wails mock enthusiastically. It wails because no one else can. Begrudgingly letting all know to go. To go down into the earth where it is dark and cold and lonely. Where beyond the cement walls sunk into the loam millions of creatures writhe in dirt. But still no one changes course.
